You can easily create a U.S. Micropolitan Statistical Area map using Mapline. Created in 2003 for statistical purposes based on counties or county equivalents, micropolitan statistical areas are urban areas with a population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000. United States have 576 micropolitan areas. The term “micropolitan” refers to population centers that are at least 160 km far away from larger cities. There are more housing subdivisions found in these areas because of lower land and labor costs.

Some of these areas are larger than other metropolitan areas. The largest of such areas is found in Torrington, Connecticut. It has a population of 35,202.

They are similar to metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) except that they are not defined in country-wide counties but only within the towns of the 6 states in New England regions.
