Quick Reference Guide

Optimized Route Stops

Optimized Route Stops allow you to automatically sequence visits, pickups, or deliveries in the most efficient order possible. Instead of manually planning routes or relying on static spreadsheets, Mapline uses advanced routing algorithms to calculate optimal stop order based on your selected rules and constraints.

Whether you’re managing field sales reps, delivery fleets, or service technicians, optimized routing reduces drive time, lowers fuel costs, and increases daily productivity. The results are written directly into your dataset, giving you structured, actionable routing intelligence you can map, report on, and automate. It’s route planning powered by real-world logic.

ADD OPTIMIZED ROUTE STOPS

To begin, determine your route type: visits, pickups, or deliveries. Then select your source dataset and apply any relevant filters to define which records should be included in the route optimization. Once your dataset is selected, you can configure optional visit settings to refine how your routes behave.

  • Group Visits: Select a relevant dataset column to group multiple stops together (for example, grouping visits by account or location).
  • Required Visits: Apply a filter to indicate which visits must be included in every route calculation.
  • Pickup Quantities: Define how much of a product or item must be picked up at each stop. You can dynamically pull this from an existing dataset column or manually enter a static value.
  • Delivery Quantities: Works the same as Pickup Quantities, allowing you to assign delivery volumes to stops.
  • Stop Duration: Set the maximum amount of time each stop is expected to take.
  • Time Windows: Define specific timeframes during which a stop can be visited.

VEHICLE SETTINGS

Vehicle settings apply to all route types. Start by selecting your starting points:

  • Vehicles: Define where vehicles begin their routes, such as a yard, warehouse, or home office.
  • Locations: Assign routes based on employee home addresses or main offices.

Next, enter your vehicle information. You can pull vehicle data from an existing Mapline dataset or manually enter vehicle addresses.

Configure optional vehicle settings:

  • Departure Time: Set a predetermined static departure time for routes.
  • Break: Define a predetermined break time within the route schedule.

OUTPUT VALUES

Output values determine which routing details are written back into your dataset. These fields provide the structured results of your route optimization and can power dashboards, filters, and reports.

  • Route Number
  • Stop Number
  • Vehicle Starting Location
  • Vehicle Ending Location
  • Drive Distance from Previous Location
  • Drive Distance to Next Location
  • Running Total Drive Time
  • Total Route Drive Time
  • Wait Time Since Previous Stop Point
  • Trip Time from Previous Stop Point Departure
  • Route Start Time
  • Estimated Arrival Time
  • Estimated Departure Time

Pro Tip: The output values you select will appear directly in your dataset once routing is complete. Large datasets with many vehicles or stops may take a few minutes to fully populate, especially when advanced constraints are applied, so allow time for the calculations to finish before making adjustments.

ROUTE SETTINGS

Route settings determine how Mapline prioritizes and calculates optimization. These configurations are powerful because they shape the balance between efficiency, workload distribution, profitability, and operational constraints. Choosing the right strategy ensures your routes align with real-world business goals, not just shortest distance.

GENERAL SETTINGS

Choose how you want Mapline to optimize your routes:

  • Maximize Stops and Minimize Routes: Fit as many stops as possible into the fewest number of routes.
  • Maximize Stops and Minimize Overall Trip Time: Prioritize overall travel efficiency while maximizing stop coverage.
  • Maximize Overall Value of Routes: Optimize for profitability or value-based prioritization.
  • Follow a Custom Priority Order and Maximize Stops: Route based on a predefined ranking logic while still maximizing stops.

Next, determine your route end points:

  • Round Trip: Vehicle returns to its starting location.
  • No Specific Ending Point: Route ends at the final stop.
  • Single Static Ending Address: All routes end at a predefined location.

Select your vehicle type to ensure road compatibility:

  • Passenger Vehicle: Standard routing suitable for cars and small vehicles.
  • Straight Truck: Routing optimized for medium-sized commercial vehicles.
  • Semi Truck: Routing adjusted for large freight vehicles and restricted roads.

Determine whether you need curbside routing, if you want routes numbered by vehicle, and select your preferred distance units (miles or kilometers).

OPTIONAL ROUTE CONSTRAINTS

Max Routes: Sets the maximum total number of routes generated. Useful for limiting overall operational capacity.

Max Routes Per Vehicle: Limits how many routes a single vehicle can handle.

Max Stops Per Route: Caps the number of stops allowed within each route.

Min Stops Per Route: Ensures routes meet a minimum threshold of activity.

Max Trip Time Per Route: Restricts total trip time for each route.

Min Trip Time Per Route: Establishes a minimum expected duration for routes.

Max Drive Time Per Route: Limits total driving time to prevent overextension.

Min Drive Time Per Route: Ensures routes are substantial enough to justify dispatch.

Max Drive Distance Per Route: Caps total distance traveled.

Min Drive Distance Per Route: Sets a minimum travel distance for route viability.

Finally, choose whether your routes should update automatically whenever data changes or remain manual until recalculated. Click OK to generate your optimized routes.

APPLY YOUR ROUTES

Once your routes are generated, they become fully integrated into your dataset and ready to power real-world execution. Because routing results are written directly into your data columns, you can immediately visualize, filter, export, and automate based on optimized stop order and travel logic.

  • Map and visualize each route to review efficiency, territory balance, and workload distribution.
  • Filter by route number or vehicle to generate driver-specific views and daily dispatch plans.
  • Export route details with arrival times, stop order, and drive metrics for field teams.
  • Trigger automations based on route assignments, estimated arrival times, or stop sequences.
  • Build dashboards to track total drive time, route profitability, or vehicle utilization.
