Dataset Columns are the foundation of how your data works inside Mapline. While every dataset starts with basic fields like names, addresses, or numeric values, Mapline allows you to expand those fields into powerful, dynamic columns that calculate, enrich, automate, and activate your information. Different column types exist because not all data behaves the same; some fields store raw values, others run calculations, and others trigger actions.
This structured flexibility allows your dataset to evolve from a simple table into an operational engine. By choosing the right column type, you gain more control, deeper insight, and smarter workflows across maps, dashboards, routes, and automations.
WHAT IS A DATASET COLUMN?
A dataset column in Mapline is a structured field that stores or generates information for every record (row) in your dataset. Like a column in Excel, it organizes data vertically; but in Mapline, columns can do far more than simply hold static values. Some columns calculate results, some enrich your data with geographic intelligence, some track system metadata, and others trigger actions.
Unlike a traditional spreadsheet column, many Mapline columns are dynamic and can update automatically based on changes to your data. This matters because it allows your dataset to stay current, actionable, and fully integrated with maps, dashboards, reports, and automations.
ADD DATASET COLUMN
Easily add new columns to your dataset by clicking the blue plus + sign in the top menubar of your dataset. From there, select the type of column you need. Each column type serves a unique purpose, whether you’re storing raw data, running calculations, enriching records, or triggering actions. Explore the different types of dataset columns below, and click the links for a more in-depth tutorial on each type of column.
1. Data Column: Adds a new blank column to your dataset where you can manually enter or import data, useful for adding notes, statuses, internal tags, or custom attributes specific to your workflow.
2. Formula Column: Runs a calculation and writes the result into a new dataset column, ideal for lookups, aggregations, categorizations, rankings, or custom logic that powers reporting and analytics.
3. Geo-Enriched Column: Adds proprietary geographic intelligence such as territory information, distance and drive time calculations, optimized routes, demographics, or clustering, perfect for location-based analysis and operational planning.
4. Meta Data Column: Instantly adds system-level metadata to your dataset to improve tracking, auditing, and reporting, including:
- Date Created: The date and time the record was originally added to the dataset.
- Created By: The user who created the record.
- Date Modified: The most recent date and time the record was updated.
- Modified By: The user who last edited the record.
- Mapline Record ID: A unique identifier assigned by Mapline to differentiate each record.
- Geocode Status: Indicates whether the record’s address has been successfully geocoded.
5. Button Column: Adds clickable buttons directly to your dataset rows that trigger custom actions when selected, useful for launching workflows, opening links, or executing automations.
6. File Column: Allows you to attach files to individual records, providing additional documentation, images, contracts, or reference materials for deeper context.
